One of the cool perks of traveling with a show across the country is that I have access to practice in empty theaters all the time. It’s fun to play concertos from memory and imagine the audience.

The Grondahl Trombone Concerto is my absolute favorite and I hope to play it with a symphony in my career. Putting it out there into the world now!!

I had the incredible privilege to work with the prolific Broadway orchestrator, Jonathan Tunick, this week. It was magical to learn about his insights orchestrating Stephen Sondheim’s musicals.

Jonathan came up to me during a break and struck up a conversation about bass trombone. We chatted about different ways to set up and bass trombone and manufactures (I know, very nerdy!)

We then started talking about The Music Man (as you do) and he let me in on a few melody and music theory secrets that are within the score.

I also learned that he was a clarinet player in his early career. I asked him if he still played, and he mentioned to me that it has been collecting dust for a while and doesn’t play much these days. But he seems to have a fondness for the instrument in his writing!

Truly an inspirational day! ✨✨✨

Check out this beautiful euphonium solo from the trombone book of ‘Urinetown’. There are a few moments like this in the show and it adds such a beautiful color to the orchestration. Such an underrated instrument and should be added in more shows! I had a blast playing this production with @kidztheater for the past two weeks and they did such a great job!
